LOGO DESIGN

To mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak

of the First World War, the Museums of Niagara Association (MONA) called on local artists to create an anniversary logo to be used throughout the region.

I am very appreciative to have the winning design!

On September 13th, 2016 the Queenston Post Office celebrated

Laura Secord’s birthday with a

pictorial cancellation stamp.

A cancellation (or cancel) is a postal marking applied to a postage stamp, or a piece of postal stationery, indicating that the item has been used. Today, most postmarks are applied by machine however, most post offices still have a simple hand applied cancel. A new, unique, pictorial, dated cancel has been created for Queenston, home of Laura Secord. Collecting cancellations, or postal markings, is a unique part of stamp collecting. Collectors travel the world, stopping at each post office for a cancel mark. These collections are very distinct, in contrast to simple stamp collecting.

The cancel depicts the home of Canadian heroine Laura Secord who, during the War of 1812, departed on an epic 32 kilometre journey to warn British forces of an impending American attack. The Queenston post office has quite a long history, as it opened back in 1801 and is one of the oldest running post offices in Canada.
